Shane Macdonald set out to defend his QLD Title at Gympie's
Mothar mountain Speedway on Sunday night the 25th of April after
the first night of racing on Saturday was washed out with the
rain Mother Nature brought down. With the whole program now
being run in one night, it was going to be fairly hectic with a
grueling five heats and a 40 lap final.
Shane obtained two 4th's, two 3rd's and a 1st in his heats
accruing enough points to qualify out of position nine in the
main event, while brother Nathan had a 1st, two 3rd's a 4th and
a 5th in his heats which placed him beside Shane out of position
ten.
With the main event underway, Victorian Mark Carlin lead the
field away before Mark Raymont spun Glen Pagel in turn one which
saw a complete restart. Todd Doyle who shared the front
row with Carlin (both being former National Champions) ran away
with the second start to lead the event, while Nathan and Shane
started to show their team colours settling into 7th and 8th
place respectively racing each other for position side by side.
Nathan then made his move around the outside of Darren White and
Gavin Lorensen for 5th.
Mark Carlin soon retired with steering problems along with Todd
Doyle who slowly drifted back through the field. Darran
White annexed 5th place from Nathan with Shane in 6th. Nathan
then passed Brett Baxter for 4th who was suffering a deflating
right front tyre. Another stoppage saw the line-up with
former QLD Champion Aidan Raymont in the lead, followed by Glenn
Pagel, Darran White, Nathan Macdonald and Shane Macdonald.
Nathan chased the tail of White for several laps before another
car spun which brought on the yellow lights once again. As
the restart got underway Darran White spun Glenn Pagel at the
top of the mountain which saw White relegated to the back of the
field.
Nathan now sitting in a podium position with Shane in 4th with 5
laps to go. Glenn Pagel momentarily lost control in the bottom hairpin
while trying to pass Raymont which let both Nathan and Shane
through for 2nd and 3rd. This opened the door up for
Nathan to challenge Raymont for the win. Macdonald
hassling Raymont for the final three laps which drew to a climax
with the crowd on their feet, Nathan pushing too hard in the
final corner who nearly spun out with Shane making contact.
Luckily both Nathan and Shane kept it going to cross the line in
2nd and 3rd respectively with Aidan Raymont the eventual winner.
Glenn Pagel would finish in 4th, Dennis Shallcross 5th and
Rodney Pammenter 6th who also drove through field after coming
from the B-Main. Royce Ernst was running strongly in the
final until he retired on lap 35.
Other Toowoomba locals Shane Langton, Dennis Bullpitt and Kerry
Lack failed to qualify for the 40 lap feature after some
misfortune in their earlier heats.
Shane and Nathan will be racing at Maryborough this coming
weekend the 1st and 2nd of May for the richest Modified
Production race in Australia, "The Australian Open". The
event boasts a whopping $3000 to the winner of the 50 lap main
event. The team will also be contesting the NSW Title at
Lismore the weekend after.
