Nathan
Macdonald made one of the worst mistakes in his career on Saturday night at
Charlton Raceway Toowoomba. While leading the feature race after starting
from 4th, Macdonald came up the front straight to greet (what he thought) was
the chequered flag. After slowing down, Macdonald rolled around another
lap, and to his disgust the chequered flag was out, which meant he had only seen
the white flag the lap before which means one lap to go. Nathan eventually
crossed the line in 3rd place. Peter Rodgers drove a hard race to win the
final with Shane Hollyman in 2nd place.
The first heat of the night was very greasy and wet,
with the 6 cylinder cars fairing very well. Travis Hollyman took an early
lead, only to half spin allowing Nathan Macdonald to capitalise after coming
from 3rd spot. Macdonald was then under fire from Michael Zimmerlee in a
club car. Macdonald dropped back to 2nd only to make a manoeuvre around
the outside through lapped traffic to take the lead back and win the heat.
Travis Hollyman 2nd and Shane Hollyman 3rd.
Heat 2 was a very tacky track with
plenty of grip. Nathan started from 4th. Whilst coming into turn
one, Macdonald went around the outside of Norm Townsend. Townsend slid up
and hit Macdonald in the left front wheel. Macdonald knew something was
wrong straight away as the steering wheel was off centre. Macdonald
pressed on as the car still felt pretty good. The Mac1 Designs Commodore
of Macdonald made its way into 2nd following Shane Hollyman around the outside
of Peter Rodgers. Macdonald surged ahead to make a right move around the
outside of Hollyman as he encountered lapped traffic. Macdonald won the
heat comfortably. Back in the pits, the collision between Townsend and
Macdonald had bent the left hand front strut and rack end. We repaired
this for the next race.
Nathan
started from 4th in heat 3. While running 4th Macdonald pounced when Shane
Hollyman got off line slightly up the back straight, he was able to get a good
run into turn 4 around the outside into 3rd. Peter Rodgers in car #44 was
the next target sitting in 2nd place. Nathan pressed on sitting on
Rodgers' tail for the entire race. Macdonald just didn't quite have the
pace to make a move, having to settle for 3rd.
