Nathan claims North QLD Title in Mackay
Monday November 6, 2006

A successful trip to Mac's Speedway Mackay, saw Nathan bring home the title, trophy, and prize pool.  There were over 25 cars at the event, with a format of three 12lap heats, and a gruelling 40 lap final.

Macdonald started from position 4 in the first heat.  The track was in good shape after it received nearly 3 inches of rain the night before.  Macdonald drove the commodore into 2nd and right on the tale of race leader Trent Wilson.  Macdonald followed Wilson around the granite track, as he pushed to get up the inside on several occasions but didn't quite have the momentum.  With one lap to go Macdonald got a good run up the front straight, as Macdonald took the inside and made a pass in turn 1 to win the heat.  Macdonald was later put back to 2nd as officials deemed Macdonald to have run too low and passed on the infield.  Trent Wilson won the heat with Macdonald 2nd and Martin Cross who hails from Brisbane in 3rd.

Heat 2 found Nathan starting out of 2, with local hero Jason Boss in his VY Commodore in 6th position.  Macdonald jumped straight to the lead and opened a gap over his rivals until 2 cars come together which saw a restart.  Boss was now in 2nd, as the greens flashed Macdonald knew Boss wouldn't be far away.  Jason began to stick the bonnet of his commodore up the inside, as the two cars raced side by side for several laps, as what some described as the best racing they have seen for a long time.  Boss had the better of Macdonald up the straight but Macdonald would have the upper around the turns.  With 1 lap to go Bossy jumped into 1st in turn 1, as Nathan done a switch and ran down the bottom up the back straight, both cars neck and neck, not giving each other much room.  The final turn came as both cars touched and hooked together, as they veered onto the infield.  Macdonald and Boss were able to keep the cars going as Boss un hooked and crossed the line first and Macdonald 2nd.  The officials actually put 3rd placed car 1st and Macdonald and Boss Equal 2nd as they crossed over onto the infield on the final turn.

The third and final heat found Macdonald on the front row in position 2, after several cars pulled out and Macdonald was moved up on the grid on the track.  Nathan led the heat from start to finish to win the heat comfortably and get some good track time in for the final.

Nathan qualified out of position 4 along with Trent Wilson, the two tossed a coin which saw Macdonald relegated back to fifth.  Martin Cross ran strong to qualify in 6th.  Mackay locals Jason Boss and Matt Hawkins were on the front row, with Boss on the inside.

As the 40 lap main event got underway, Jason Boss stole the lead with Hawkins in 2nd.  Macdonald moved his way into 3rd behind Hawkins as lapped cars come into effect, as Hawkins and Macdonald diced between cars for a few laps until Macdonald drove on the inside up the front straight and into 2nd.  Jason Boss had a good lead as he cut through the traffic, but was put into a squeeze by some lapped cars and ultimately, wrecked his steering rack.  The yellow lights were brought on with Bossy still in the race lead, Nathan Macdonald 2nd, Matt Hawkins 3rd and Martin Cross 4th.  As the race got underway again, Boss bowed out in turn 1 with no steering, which handed the lead to Macdonald.  Meanwhile the yellows were brought back on after an incident involving nearly half the field.  Macdonald led the field away for the first time and immediately started to put a buffer on over his rivals.  Martin Cross moved through and into 2nd place.

As the laps wound down there were 2 more stoppages, but Macdonald looked to have everything under control as he led the feature from then on.  Martin Cross was unlucky as his right rear tyre deflated with a few laps to go while running a solid 2nd.  Macdonald came around to greet the checkers on lap 40 and was pumped after an awesome drive.

Macdonald took in the much needed track time in preparation for the Australian Outlaw Title on the 26th & 27th January.  Nathan would like to thank his crew who flew down from Toowoomba to be there and help out.

Tomorrow night there should be some highlights footage put on the web from the weekend, so keep an eye out for that.
