Macdonald wins back to back QLD Titles
Sunday February 18, 2007
Nathan
Macdonald won back to back Queensland Titles at Kingaroy
Speedway on Saturday night. Rain threatened the event early on
but a light shower was not enough to stop the racing. Macdonald
made a clean sweep of the night winning all three heats and the
15 lap feature. Peter Rogers crossed the line in 2nd and new
comer Mark Lester in 3rd.
To
start the night off heat one saw Paul Ledgerwood and Peter
Rogers off the front row, followed by Darran Lester, Mark
Lester, Nathan Macdonald, Stewart Fricker and Anthony Pearse.
Ledgy got away to a good start, breaking free and opening up a
handy lead. Mark Lester Moved around the outside of Peter
Rogers with Nathan Macdonald following suit. Macdonald then
made a move on the outside of Mark Lester into 2nd and started
to chase down Paul Ledgerwood. Macdonald found a line around
Ledgy and into the lead. Macdonald crossed the line in first
place with Ledgy in 2nd and Darran Lester coming through for
3rd.
Stewart Fricker and Mark Lester were to start off the front row
in heat two, followed by Paul Ledgerwood and Nathan Macdonald on
row two and Darran Lester and Peter Rogers on row three.
Fricker jumped straight to the lead as Macdonald started to move
his way into 2nd place. Macdonald and Fricker were battling for
the lead, when Macdonald got up the inside down the back
straight, the two cars come together which then saw Fricker
spinning out. Macdonald went on to win heat 2 with Darran
Lester finishing in 2nd and Peter Rogers 3rd.
Heat
three would see a showdown everyone was waiting for, with Nathan
Macdonald to start from pole position with current Australian
champ Darran Lester on the outside. Macdonald had the better
run on the pole line and jumped to the lead with Lester slotting
into 2nd. Macdonald was untouched all race and lead from start
to finish. Lester greeted the checkered flag in 2nd and Peter
Rogers 3rd.
With
three heat wins to his name Macdonald would start from position
1, with Darran Lester to start from 2. But Lester had engine
problems which would force him not to contest the final. This
made way for Ledgy to start from 2, with Peter Rogers out of 3,
Mark Lester 4 and and Stewart Fricker out of 5. Macdonald
surged ahead into the lead with Ledgy into 2nd. Macdonald ran
away from the rest of the field as Ledgy and Rogers battled for
2nd. Rogers found a way past after a mistake from Ledgy.
Stewart Fricker pulled out after a few laps with engine dramas.
Ledgy was then under siege from Mark Lester. This being Mark's
first race at the Kingaroy venue. Ledgy ran wide with one lap
to go and brushed the wall which then let Lester through to
3rd. Macdonald greeted the checkered flag to reclaim his QLD
Title.
Interestingly enough, the East Coast A Grade QLD Title has been
within the Macdonald family for a few years now, as Nathan won
it back in 2003/2004, which then saw his brother wrestle it off
him in 2004/2005, then Nathan winning the prestigous title in
2005/2006 season and now in 2006/2007.
The
car will have a short break and be tidied up for the next race
meeting at Charlton Raceway on the 10th March 2007.
